Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering - GATE

Admission to Postgraduate Programmes, with MHRD and other Government Scholarship/Assistantship, in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy/Science at Engineering Colleges/Institutes in the country will be open only to those who qualify through GATE. Some Engineering Colleges/Institutes specify GATE as mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes. However, GATE qualification in itself does not guarantee either admission or Scholarship/Assistantship.


Eligibility :

(a) Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

(b) Master's degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

(c) Candidates in the second or higher year of the (Post B.Sc.) Four-year Integrated Master's degree programme in Engineering/ Technology or in the third or higher year of the Five-year Integrated Master's degree/ Dual degree programme in Engineering/ Technology.

(d) Candidates with qualifications obtained through examination conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/ AICTE as equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.


Information Brochure and Application Form

Application for GATE 2004 may be submitted either ONLINE (Internet based) or by POST. Registration fee for ONLINE mode is Rs. 900/- and by POST is Rs. 1,000/- Online submission of applications may be done by accessing the websites of IITs and IISc Bangalore. After submission of the online application, the candidate has to download and fill in a second part of the application (affixing the photo and signature in the space provided) and mail it to the concerned institute along with the original bank pay-in-slip or Demand Draft and required certificates.

For candidates preferring to submit the application by POST, copies of Information Brochure and Application Form are obtainable from designated Bank Branches. Candidates are required to submit the pay-in-slip in original with their applications.

Information Brochure and Application Form are also available by Post from/at the counter of GATE Offices on payment of Registration fee of Rs. 1000/- by Demand Draft drawn in favour of the Institute where the candidate intends to register. Two self-addressed slips are to be enclosed along with the request to the Chairman-GATE of the concerned Institute.

Structure of Examination :

All candidates for GATE 2004 will appear in a single paper of 3 hours duration and of 150 marks. GATE 2004 will have the following papers :
